About the colour: Blaeu Atlas Alkmaar canal grey

Willem Janszoon Blaeu (1571 – 1638) was a Dutch cartographer, atlas maker and publisher. His sublime maps were featured in several works of the painter Johannes Vermeer. They also form the bulk of the legendary Atlas Maior, published by Blaeu’s son Joan in 11 volumes between 1662 and 1672. It was the largest and most expensive book published in the 17th century. We took a colour from the map of Alkmaar to represent the city where Blaeu was born.
